Franco and Hathaway to Host Oscars!!!

Oscar season - time to kick this blog back into high gear.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway are hosting the Oscars ? ! ? ! ? !

I have to say, the more I think about it, the more I love it. Both have proven themselves skilled at comedy and drama, and both have the live TV gravitas to make it work (both hosting Saturday Night Live).

This is obviously a ploy by the Board of Governors to skew younger, but I think it's definitely an inspired choice and makes me excited about the telecast. It doesn't hurt that Anne Hathaway rocks my face off, and I loved James Franco in 127 Hours.

This is also interesting on many levels. James Franco is probably going to be nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for 127 Hours (a much deserved nomination, by the way). Anne could be nominated for Love and Other Drugs, but right now, people aren't too sure about that. If James is nominated, could he reap enough good will from this to leapfrog Colin Firth (The King's Speech)?

Good job, Academy.

On an unrelated note, the Spirit Awards (formerly the Independent Spirit Awards) will announce their nominees tomorrow. This is always a very cool awards show (Sarah Silverman hosted a couple years ago...that's reason enough). With the nominees, there's always some interesting films that rise to the surface. Coverage and commentary here after the fact.
