American Book Review has compiled a list of the 100 best first lines from novels.
This reminds me of an assignment I had in middle school. My English teacher asked me to "write the first line of a story about a road." In an episode of teen angst, I wrote, "I hate roads" and turned it in. To her, this was brilliant and left her wanting more, which was the purpose of the assignment. About ten minutes of in-class praise later, I realized that I (a) am a great writer, or (b) was the teacher's favorite. I'm hoping (a), guessing (b). I guess (c) I got lucky, is also an option.
